8 Reasons Not to Hire A Business Coach
Before investing any money in hiring a business coach, the first question you should ask yourself is: “should I hire a business coach?”
Whilst it is true that a business coach will give you new perspectives that allow you to progress much faster than you would do if you were on your own, a business coach is not for everyone.
A business coach can give you the tools and challenge you to think differently about your business. Which will unlock new insights and thinking to help your business grow, but that doesn’t mean you should hire one.
In fact here are my top 8 reasons not to hire a business coach:
1. You don’t want to go outside your comfort zone
A business coach isn’t necessarily going to make you feel good. The role of the business coach is to point out all of things you are doing which aren’t helping your business. These are the things that no one else is going to tell you (because they don’t want to get fired!)
Not every business owner wants to grow their business, make more money or change the world. And that’s perfectly fine.
If you’re the sort of person who doesn’t like hearing feedback and if you’re the sort of person who is completely happy where they are, have no desire to grow their business, then a hiring a business coach is not right for you.
If stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new, is just not for you, that’s ok too.
2. You have unresolved personal issues
If you have a deeply personal issue that is affecting your relationship with your significant other or the rest of your family, or your sense of well being, then you don’t need a business coach, you need a psychologist or counsellor. A Business coach is neither of these.
3. You need to learn new technical skills
If the problem you’re facing relates to something that you have no knowledge of how to do, for example web design or accounting. Then you need to learn new technical skills. You don’t need to hire a business coach, you need to take a suitable skills course like those offered on Lynda.com, Skillshare or simply browse Youtube
4. You’re not coachable
Every great sports team has a coach. Coaches play a critical role in helping the teams win games, leagues and championships. Like a sports coach, a business coach will correct you when you’re making mistakes and show you how you can do things better. But some people can’t take feedback.
Some people talk about self improvement yet are unwilling to listen to feedback. They can’t cope with being told their way isn’t the best way. If you don’t like to be told you’re doing something wrong, or that there’s a better way, then don’t hire a business coach.
5. You don’t have time for a business coach
If you’re really busy and can’t find time in your diary to meet with a business coach (even via Zoom), take your actions and do your homework then business coaching isn’t right for you. But it would be really useful to understand why you don’t have time for business coaching!
A business coach will help you be more productive and save you time. This will make you more money. If you don’t want more freedom to spend time with your kids or travel; through better processes and systems, and you hate the idea of working less, you shouldn’t hire a business coach.
A Business coach will allow you take control of your business. You’ll have clear goals and targets which will have you making more money. But, if you really happy with what you have or have more than enough money, don’t waste your time and money thinking abut hiring a business coach.
6. You don’t want to be held accountable
Let’s face it, you’re a busy business owner. But it’s not always easy to deliver on your commitments. If you’re the sort of person who agrees to things, but doesn’t follow through and doesn’t deliver, then having a business coach to keep you accountable isn’t going to be right for you.
7. You aren’t sure what you want out of life or your career
If you don’t know what you want out of life or whether you’re on the right career path, then a business coach is not for you. Instead try asking yourself these 7 questions to find out what you want to do with your life.
8. You can’t afford to hire a business coach
If you think business coaching is going to be a complete waste of money then a business coach is not right for you.
If you think you can’t afford business coaching or will be really expensive – then you should at least find out more. Even though you will recoup the cost many times over, it’s probably nowhere near the sort of money that you had in mind.
But if you have high credit card balances, or are in debt then you shouldn’t hire a coach to get you out of a hole.
